Glossary

Revalidation, deactivation, reactivation, TBD

Twelve terms. Each one has a source. If a sentence has no source, it does not belong here.

Revalidation
CMS requires a full enrollment update on a cycle: 5 years, or 3 for DMEPOS.
Source: 42 CFR 424.515
Deactivation
Billing privileges stop. Claims deny. It is not the same word as revocation.
Source: 42 CFR 424.540(a)(3)
Revocation
CMS ends the enrollment for cause. A deactivated billing privilege can be reactivated; a revocation is a different action.
Source: 42 CFR 424.535
Suspension
A payment hold. People mix it up with deactivation. This file does not tell you which one happened.

TBD
The enrollment is in the public file and the due date is not. CMS publishes about six months ahead.

Enrollment ID
The PECOS enrollment. One enrollment can include more than one NPI, so a row is not always a separate customer.
Source: CMS revalidation list
NPI
The 10-digit national provider identifier. It is not the enrollment.
Source: NPPES
MAC
The Medicare Administrative Contractor that mails the notice and receives the application.
Source: CMS revalidation page
PECOS
The enrollment system. This product never asks you to sign into it.
Source: CMS
Reactivation
Effective the day CMS receives a complete application. Not retroactive. Services in the gap are not billable to the patient.
Source: 42 CFR 424.540
CMS-855
The enrollment form family. 855A institutional, 855B groups and certain suppliers, 855I individuals, 855S DMEPOS, 855O order-and-refer, 855R reassignment.

Monthly check
Your NPIs compared with this month's CMS list and last month's. You only hear about four changes: new, date moved, past due, or gone.
